The table is a true pleasure: it's where we gather with family and friends. Entertaining is an art, and it naturally begins with setting the scene, creating a beautiful setting, as they say. The pleasure of the eyes is just as important as that of the palate. ;)
During your meal, the table should be set before your guests arrive. If the table isn't set, your guests won't feel expected… Setting a table should therefore be done in advance and not at the last minute; it takes time. And let's not forget that it should remain a pleasure, let's not forget that ;)
Tableware includes linens (tablecloth and napkins), various glasses and cutlery, and dinnerware. These are the essentials.
There are now 'optional' items that will add comfort and/or elegance to the table.
The carafe
A water carafe, ideally pitcher-shaped with a flared spout and handle. And a wine carafe, which has a flared body and a narrow neck. It closes with a stopper made of the same material, that is, glass or crystal.
Knife rests
Knife rests are meant to protect the tablecloth from dirty cutlery after use. They also indicate that the cutlery won't be changed after each course, so it's appropriate to place it on the knife rest. It's one of the decorative elements of the table. It's a very attractive decorative touch, so why not use it? ;)
Candlesticks and candelabras
Indirect lighting from one or more candles creates a warm atmosphere, and it would be a shame to miss out on it.
Candlesticks hold only one candle and are cylindrical in shape. They can be made of silver-plated metal, porcelain, earthenware, and so on. They can be scattered across the table or placed in the center, grouped in threes or fours. If you don't have candlesticks, you can repurpose everyday objects, such as glasses, small jars, or seashells. As for the candle color, the classic choice that goes with everything and ensures you never make a mistake is white or cream. Of course, all colors are welcome, provided they complement the tableware, tablecloth, or flowers.
Candlesticks, on the other hand, hold several candles. They therefore create more light and will make your table sparkle more. :)
Salt and pepper
Don't forget the salt and pepper shakers. They're practical and decorative too! If you have many guests, it's best to have several shakers. You can place them on a small tray, positioned beyond the glasses and towards the center of the table.
The vase
A few flowers will instantly give your table a festive air. Whether they're rustic blooms (daisies, cornflowers, etc.) or more sophisticated ones (camellias, lilies, etc.), flowers will be much appreciated! A few guidelines: the bouquet shouldn't exceed 25-30 cm in height so as not to obstruct conversation or the view. Avoid flowers with a very strong fragrance that could bother guests or even interfere with the enjoyment of the food. The bouquet placed in the center of the table should be beautiful, no matter where you're seated.
Classic vases can be used, or even a champagne bucket, a tureen,...
